GB100WSL - Southampton Dock Gate 42 April 10th 2012
On the fatefully early afternoon on April 1oth 1912 RMS Titanic the world's greatest ocean liner was pulled out of dock gates 43/44 of Southampton's White Star Dock (now Ocean Dock) on her way to New York via Cherbourg and Queenstown (now Cobh).
At 23:40 4 days later the ship hit an iceberg in the north Atlantic and jut over two and a half hours later the ship went down. Despite just over 700 lives making it safely to lifeboats over 1500 people perished in those icy waters.
One of those to perish was Thomas King, master-at-arms on the ship and great grand-father of IVARC's G0UKB, so it was decided that a special event station should be held in memory of the event. Itchen Valley ARC was extremely privileged to be allowed onto the busy, working dock at Southampton and allowed to set up its station on berth 42 of Ocean Dock, just a few metres away from berths 43/44 where the city's commemorative flotilla sailed from at noon April 10th 2014.
More details of the special event station and a summery of its contacts can be found on its QSL page http://www.qrz.com/ (you will need to register, then search for callsign GB100WSL)
